What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is meant to restore the shape, size, and appearance of a damaged tooth. It completely covers the dental structure, thus repairing any damage that was already done while simultaneously providing protection against further harm. Our crowns are made entirely of ceramic, and they are carefully designed to resemble your real teeth as closely as possible.

Dental crowns can be used in many different situations. Do you have a weakened tooth that’s in danger of breaking? Were any of your teeth chipped in an accident? Did you recently have a root canal treatment performed? Have you lost a single tooth and want to replace it with a dental implant? If your answer to any of these questions is yes, there’s a good chance that a crown will be recommended to help you restore your smile.

The Dental Crown Process

Your dental crown will be made at a separate dental laboratory. As such, the process of making it will require you to visit our office at least two separate times. At the first appointment, we will remove enamel from the top and sides of the tooth in order to create enough space for the crown. Then we will capture an impression of your mouth, which will be used to determine the crown’s size and shape. You’ll be given a temporary crown to keep your tooth safe until your next visit.

Once the crown is completed, it will be sent to our office. We will then be able to schedule your second appointment. During this visit, the temporary crown will be removed and replaced with the permanent one.

The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

  • Repairing a tooth with a dental crown can keep it safe from further damage and make it less likely that you’ll need more invasive forms of dental treatment later.
  • A crown allows your tooth to function normally again, so you will be able to comfortably chew all kinds of foods.
  • Taking proper care of a dental crown will allow it to last for a very long time (with some patients being able to keep the same crown for around 15 years).
  • Our all-ceramic crowns don’t draw unwanted attention because they’re designed to blend in seamlessly with the rest of your smile.
