If decay-free teeth, healthy gums, and a clean bill of health from your dentist are on your list, then this blog is for you! Below are six simple (but effective) New Year’s resolutions for a healthy smile.

1. Get a New Toothbrush (or Toothbrush Head) Every Quarter

As you use your toothbrush, the bristles get frayed and worn. That’s why the American Dental Association recommends getting a new one every quarter! To help you remember, set a reminder on your phone. Or, if you have an electric toothbrush, schedule the replacement head to be sent to you every third month.

2. Floss Each Morning or Evening

Despite the importance of flossing, roughly 33% of Americans surveyed skip it entirely. If you’re one of them, then now is the time to turn over a new leaf. An easy first step is finding a type of floss you’ll actually use, like pre-threaded floss!

3. Eat Vegetables with Each Meal

It’s very common for patients to focus on what they need to eliminate from their diet around this time of year. Sometimes, it’s more helpful to think about what you can add, like colorful vegetables! Eggplants, carrots, onions, and broccoli are all jam-packed with nutrients that will keep your teeth and gums healthy.

4. Use a Straw When Drinking Dark-Colored Beverages

Do you love starting your day with a hot cup of coffee? Do you enjoy sipping on a fizzy soda in the afternoon? If so, consider using a straw to prevent these dark-colored beverages from coming in contact with your teeth! This will help keep your teeth white and your enamel strong.

5. Get a Checkup and Cleaning Every Six Months

Remember, even if you implement all of the previously mentioned tips into your daily routine, your oral hygiene regimen will ultimately be incomplete if you don’t get a checkup and cleaning every six months. After all, oral cancer, gum disease, damaged restorations, and other dental problems can easily fly under the radar without routine exams!

6. Switch to Sugar-Free Gum

There are several perks to chewing gum throughout the day, including that it helps keep your breath fresh. However, it’s important to opt for a sugar-free kind so your teeth aren’t continuously exposed to sugar throughout the day. The good news is that there are a wide variety of flavors available, so “sugar-free” doesn’t mean “bland.”

About the Doctor

After graduating first in his class from Central Washington University, Dr. Tyler Schaffeld went on to obtain his dental doctorate from Oregon Health and Science University. Since 2013, he’s been using his extensive training and education to help his patients in and around Enterprise improve the look, health, and function of their smiles.
