It\u2019s\nunderstandable. Flossing can be a bit of a hassle, and many of us don\u2019t want to\ntake the time to brush <em>and <\/em>floss regularly. Because<a href=\"https:\/\/www.schaffelddental.com\/preventive-dentistry.html\"> flossing<\/a>\ndoesn\u2019t make your mouth feel as clean as brushing does, you might think that it\nisn\u2019t as important. That\u2019s actually false. Let\u2019s talk about why your dentist\nnear Joseph, OR says it\u2019s critical to floss, and what can happen if you don\u2019t\ndo it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Flossing Really That Important?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A few years ago, the Associated Press released an article stating\nthat, contrary to what dental professionals have been saying for decades,\nflossing isn\u2019t that effective at preventing cavities and gum disease. However,\nthe Journal of Dental Hygiene has proven that while flossing might not reduce\nplaque at 1 or 3 months, it can reduce gingivitis at 1, 3, and 6 months. What\nexactly does this mean for your oral health? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happens If I Don\u2019t Floss?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Neglecting to floss puts you at risk for 2 major dental\nissues: cavities between your teeth, and gingivitis. Flossing removes bacteria\nfrom between your teeth that, when left unchecked, eat away at your enamel and\nform cavities. Gingivitis is caused from bacteria in plaque irritating the gum\ntissue, causing it to bleed easily. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If gingivitis is not treated soon enough, it can progress\ninto periodontitis, or gum disease. At this stage, bacteria can form pockets in\nbetween your teeth and the gum and bone structures that support them. This can\nmake your teeth feel loose and eventually even fall out. Gum disease has also\nbeen linked to multiple other disorders, including diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer\u2019s,\nand birth complications in pregnant women. This is because the bacteria\ncharacteristic of gum disease can travel through the pockets that they created\nin your gums to reach your bloodstream. From there, they can wreak havoc on\nother parts of your body, such as your heart, lungs, and even your brain. Regular\nflossing, as well as brushing, is one of the major ways to prevent these\ncomplications. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can I Protect My Oral Health?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Floss at least once a day, ideally right before you go to\nbed in order to prevent plaque buildup while you\u2019re asleep. It doesn\u2019t really\nmatter whether you floss before or after you brush, as long as you floss at\nall. If you\u2019re having trouble reaching the teeth in the back of your mouth,\nthey make individual floss picks or water flossers that allow you to clean\nbetween your molars. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flossing might seem like an annoying habit to start, but\nonce you build the habit, it will be easy to keep up with it.
